Potters Village Trip January 2012
An extract from the Potters Village News Jan-Feb 2012 about our team’s visit in January.
The Unforgettable Visit
Whether it was a coincidence or pre-arranged, we had an 11-man team from St. Andrew’s Church, High Wycombe. Talk of a football team!! They visited for two weeks – one of them, (Andrew) came a week earlier and left a week later– but the work they did was enormous and commendable. One Saturday afternoon, they moved administration offices from the Medical Centre to the new building. The move was so swift and organised that there was no
missing paper from its place. Then they split into sub teams to work on the animal house, store room (to sort clothes and arrange the store room), made curtains for the office and teamed up again to work on the flower bed. They exhibited such a team spirit that we shall live to remember. We say a big thank you to all who came and those at the church who made the trip possible. We can’t wait for your coming back again, God willing.
In January 2012, a team of 10 people from St Andrew’s went to work in the Potter’s Village. Here is one of the live updates they sent.
We arrived last Friday and have a very eventful few days. On Saturday we helped to move the old administration offices to the new buildings that St Andrew’s have helped to fund. The buildings are still being completed but all the funding has now been secured. Part of our role here is to help with the finishing touches. Steph has been working on new curtains for the new offices which include going to the market to buy the material, cut the lining and then put in the curtains.
Some of the practical projects we were able to help with:
- Create a new flowerbed where the old wood store was located as a centre piece to Potters Village
- Finish a goat shed for 4 new goats arriving that week. Fixing the roof and stalls and a manger!
- Organise the stock room after the arrival of all the medical equipment and clothing we were able to bring
- Partitioning for the new Special Care Baby Unit that will be headed up by Rosie (previously of St Andrew’s and now working with Potters Village for several years)
- Paint the balustrading with white paint at the entrance to one of the older houses.
Whilst in Kisoro we also worked in partnership with Bishop Cranmer we helped run a holiday club for about 350 children over several days, playing football, games and learning new songs! There was a Youth Conference held at the end of the week where Simon Dust spoke at the bible Expositions for two days.
We were taken to visit a more outlying church in the diocese to see a few practical projects that have helped the community to be more self supporting. One project was to grow mushrooms to sell to the nearby hotels. The other was to provide rain water tanks for storing water that will provide water for about 4 households thus freeing up the children to attend school.
When we were leaving Kisoro, Immaculate and Herbert wrote us a wonderful card thanking us for the work and support that we were able to bring. This is what she wrote:
" Our dear friends, The words cannot express our genuine feelings for you. May the Lord who has brought you into our lives keep this friendship intact. We wish you and your families God’s rich blessings in all that you do. We wish and hope to be with you another time in the future. We wish you a safe journey as you travel back home. Thank you for blessing us and the children. Lots of love, Herbert and Immaculate "
We are looking to send out more teams in the future, so sign up and see what a difference you can make.
