Disciple Groups

Disciple groups are the small-group communities of St Andrew’s, meeting informally every week or fortnight between Sunday ‘big church’.
Disciple groups share the same ‘DNA’ as the church as a whole. They share the mission of the whole church and have three main purposes:
- To develop Christian community at small-group level
Disciple groups are encouraged to have fun together, building in food and social events to their programmes. At the same time, groups are the front line of care and support for each other in times of struggle or pain.
-
- To help each member grow as a follower (disciple) of Jesus
Disciple groups pray and explore the faith together on a regular, systematic basis. They may focus on a part of the Bible, follow a theme or course, or reflect on a movie together. Groups are encouraged to develop leadership and draw out the gifts and talents of all their members.
To share in the life and mission of the whole church
Disciple groups are encouraged to make a difference. Nearly all make a difference to ‘big’ church (eg through serving coffee or providing meals), and some have found ways to meet needs in the community beyond. The most effective groups are those that do not stay in their armchairs!
We encourage everyone at St Andrew’s to belong to a disciple group:
- In your disciple group, you can go much deeper with people than you can at ‘big’ church;
- In your disciple group, people can be cared for by the whole group through listening, prayer, or practical help;
- In your disciple group, you can explore and build faith together, tailoring what you learn to the group;
- In your disciple group, everyone has something to offer according to their gifts and skills;
- In your disciple group, you can work together as a team to contribute to the life and mission of the whole church.
Disciple groups reflect the diversity of St Andrew’s. People are not required to join a particular group because of where they live, or how long they have belonged to the church. As well as nearly every evening of the week, some groups meet during the daytime. You can find a group which is mainly for older people, groups which are mainly young adults, a sports disciple group, groups for women, and others which have grown out of the Alpha Course.
