The Noise

At St Andrew’s Church we want to be a transforming presence in our community. The Noise has become a regular fixture in the St Andrews calendar – and our second event for 2011 took place on 1st October, which also happened to be the hottest day of the year! We spent the day showing God’s love to our neighbours in real and practical ways.

We do this by going to people’s homes and helping with gardening, decorating and DIY and by holding a HUGE fun day at the church where people can come and take part in activities, have lunch and sit and chat with someone. This year we collected a few stats!:

6 projects completed including garden renovations and room redecorations
230 lunches scoffed
300+ slices of cake chomped
46 children got their hair cut
51 lady’s nails painted (and 1 man!)
100 faces painted
150 badges made and 100 pen pots decorated
33 cars washed
18 family portraits
12 apple crumbles made and eaten

Our Vicar Simon describes what went on: “The Noise is a day for our community where people from St Andrew’s go out from the church to show God’s love, serving our neighbours in practical and real ways. We want to be part of transforming our community and that’s what today is about.”

Teams went out into our community to take part in projects such as redecorating living rooms, and transforming overgrown gardens into safe, fun spaces for families to play and spend time together. Over five skips full of rubbish were taken away, drains were unblocked and gardens replanted.

Back at the Church over 300 local people took part in free activities including face painting, games, craft, family portraits and a bouncy castle. The Caribbean lunch fed over 250 guests and lots more spent time in the all day café meeting many neighbours for the first time! Practical life skills classes were offered including cooking demonstrations and a CV workshop. A Zumba taster session (provided by Pyramid Fitness) and Drama taster (by Misfitz) sessions were really popular and the team running the car wash cleaned over 25 cars.

Simon added “The Noise is happening again in October, and we really hope to see it grow and get more people from the community involved. Serving our friends and community is something we aim to do every day and so show God’s love through ways that really make a difference to people, in ways that are relevant to them.”
